“You’ve already started looking?” Boone felt like the floor had dropped out from under him. He hadn’t realized Eve was in such a hurry to move out.

That hurt a little. More than a little, if he was being honest. Though he supposed it shouldn’t come as a surprise, given how hard she’d fought against staying with him in the first place. And he hadn’t exactly made her feel welcome this week, had he?

“Only online,” she said. “I haven’t been to look at it yet. But it’s close enough to my price range that I think I can swing it, and it’s not that much more of a commute.”

Boone stared at her mutely as he grappled with the tremendous sense of loss he felt at the prospect of Eve moving out. He didn’t want to think about why he cared so much.

“I’ve got an appointment to see it tomorrow morning,” she went on. “But even if I end up getting it, it’s not available until July first, so you’re still stuck with me for a while longer.”

“There’s no hurry, Eve. You know that, right?”

“No, I know.” She stroked her thumb around the rim of her wineglass. “You’re being very tolerant about having me here.”

Tolerant. The wrongness of that word knifed through his chest. But he couldn’t exactly tell her the truth—that she’d started to feel necessary to his existence.

He shoved his chair back and began stacking their dishes to clear the table.

Eve stood to help him. “The thing is, if I don’t move fast, someone else will snap it up. And I haven’t seen much else out there in my budget—nothing decent, anyway.”

“Exactly how much farther away is this place?” he asked as they carried everything into the kitchen.

While he loaded the dirties into the dishwasher, she told him about the apartment, which was a studio all the way up in Sun Valley. The more she described it, the more he hated the sound of it. She didn’t seem particularly enthused about it either, but it was the best thing she’d found so far.

“You shouldn’t rush into anything,” he told her.

“Sure, but you’re leaving in a little over a month. I don’t have much time to lollygag around if I expect to be out of here before you are.”

Boone slammed the dishwasher shut and cleared his throat. “Yeah, about that…there’s something I want to talk to you about.”

The shift in his tone made Eve’s brows draw together. “Is everything okay?”

“Everything’s fine.” Reflexively, he touched her arm and was heartened to see her worry ease. “I’ve just been thinking. If we release your name to the public like Reagan wants, I need you to do something for me.”

Eve’s eyes searched his, full of questions. “What’s that?”

“I’m concerned about the attention you’re going to get once you’re linked with me. So I’d like you to stay here for the duration of our arrangement and maybe longer—at least until we’re sure interest in you has died down.”

He’d been thinking about it ever since Eve had agreed to let them out her by name.
